Chapter Nine
After her morning with Vivian and an invitation from Esther to visit anytime, Candice made her way to the shop. The entire five-minute drive along Main Street, Candice couldn’t help the smile on her face.
As promised, Esther scolded Vivian for taking so long, but then she immediately took Vivian in her arms and left it at that. The relationship Vivian had with the older women and her other co-workers was something Candice would’ve loved to have for herself. The shop got terribly lonely sometimes, and not even her calls with her dad seemed to help.
However, with the economy being the way it was, hiring someone just to keep her company wasn’t an option. That didn’t mean it wouldn’t have helped, of course, but until things picked up enough to warrant a second set of hands, Candice’s radio and a handful of walk-ins would have to do.
Pulling into the lot behind her shop, Candice considered visiting her dad before doing anything else. The possibility of him going through a list of twenty questions as to why she was there as well as an upcoming deadline stopped her. She could visit him after work, but if she didn’t get out of the car soon, she had a feeling she wouldn’t get out at all.
So after a handful of breaths to center herself, she cut the ignition and got out of the car.
It didn’t take long for her to find her rhythm, cutting here, sewing there, and running the machines until their gentle whir of took her thoughts elsewhere.
The first time she heard the hum of machines, her mother was in their kitchen with a gown halfway off the table and a sewing machine in the middle of it. At the time, the machine was meant for home use, but by the time Candice was five, her mother decided to run her business out of the comfort of their own home.
Seeing new people walk in and out of their front door took some getting used to, but over time, those customers became her family. Candice got to know them by name, and soon enough, she looked forward to their visits, mostly because of the sweets they brought with them and the few scraps her mother let her have.
In Candice’s line of work, getting to learn her clients by name was rare, as only a few of them visited once the wedding was through. That didn’t mean she didn’t try, but there were times she wished she could go back to working the way her mother had done. Maybe not out of her own home, but she wouldn’t have minded the relationships that developed over time while doing her mother’s kind of work.
It was a distant dream and not something she could realistically do. Most folks knew how to mend their own clothing without needing the likes of her, and it wasn’t like running a normal clothing store would’ve been any better. Like it or not, she was stuck in her small shop, cramped between two other buildings with only her thoughts and radio to keep her company.
